St Patrick's life Themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary readings for the Feast of St Patrick (usually celebrated on 17 March) Popular devotion to Patrick, and hymns associated with Ireland. St. Patrick’s Breastplate is a powerful hymn traditionally attributed to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is said to have been composed by the saint himself in the 5th century as a prayer for divine protection. It is set to a jig / set-dance tune which known in Irish traditional music circles as "St Patrick's Day" - although the hymn tune (used in this way since at least 1885) has a slightly different structure. In the rush of parades and the clang of pint glasses, it’s easy to forget that St. Patrick’s Day didn’t begin in celebration—it began in invocation.Before the drums, before the dancers, before the flood of green and Guinness, there were words whispered to the wind, prayers murmured under breath, and blessings carried in the rhythm of rain against stone.
